Guarana is actually the seeds of the Paulinia beverage shrub, which grows in tropical parts of Africa and America - for example in Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador or Colombia. Guarana is also known as waranna, wanna or Brazilian cacao. It has gained its popularity mainly through its stimulating effects on our bodies. The Amazonian Indians highly valued the seeds of Paulinia and used them to treat all kinds of ailments.
Ground guarana seed contains about 4% caffeine, which is almost twice as much as we would find in coffee. Another active ingredient contained is theophylline, a substance that is also found in tea, or theobromine, which we would find again in cocoa beans.
Guarana extract is beneficial for our immune system and promotes physical and mental activity. It also contributes to weight control and has a positive effect on fat metabolism and normal digestion.
