Lecithin is a common term for all lipids composed of choline, fatty acid, glycerol and phosphoric acid. The classical chemical name for lecithin is then phosphatidylcholine. The name lecithin is derived from the Greek lekithos and literally translates as yolk; of course, this is no coincidence - lecithin occurs naturally in abundance in egg yolks, but also in the seed cells of plants. It is mostly obtained artificially from soya beans. In our bodies, then, we find the highest concentrations of this substance in the liver, lungs, muscle tissue, heart, brain and blood plasma.
Lecithin is very important for our organism and to ensure that we have enough of it, we should supplement it artificially if possible. The physiological need for lecithin in the human body naturally increases, for example, with elevated blood cholesterol levels, excessive physical and mental stress, alcohol consumption, convalescence and regeneration. Many doctors also recommend taking it if you suffer from reduced thyroid function.
