These dark black berries are the fruit of a tropical palm tree that we would look for in the distant temperate rainforests of Chile or southern Argentina. The trees grow to a height of four to six metres, and their nutrient-laden fruits were prized by the Andean Indians, who for several thousand years have been drinking drinks made from these crushed fruits. They also used them in their traditional medicine. The Mapuche Indians even consider the Maqui berry to be a magical fruit that gives strength and endurance.
TheMaqui berry contains relatively large amounts of antioxidants, flavonoids, cyanidins, essential unsaturated fatty acids, B and C vitamins, and trace elements such as potassium, magnesium, and iron.
