Vitamin D3, also known as calciol or cholecalciferol, is a form of vitamin D. It is similar in structure to steroids, i.e. cholesterol, testosterone or cortisol. It is fat-soluble and is one of the few vitamins that our bodies cannot make.
Vitamin D is mainly taken into the body from sunlight, but we only get about 4/5 of our daily requirement this way, but this is not always the case. Especially in the winter months, when darkness comes early, we are deficient in it. So we definitely need to supplement it sensibly so that our bodies can enjoy it. Increasingly, even experts agree on this, often prescribing it as a supportive treatment for any ailment that puts a long-term strain on our immune system.
Vitamin D supports the normal function of the immune system and contributes to the normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus. It also contributes to normal calcium levels in the bones and the maintenance of normal teeth and bone health. It supports normal muscle function, so if we are deficient in it, we are at greater risk of injury, whether fractures or muscle injuries.
Vitamin D is found naturally in milk, eggs, whole grain cereals, beef liver, pure orange juice, for example, but especially in fish such as sardines, salmon, tuna, swordfish and halibut. Vitamin D is also found in cod liver oil and mushrooms.
